Gilsonite Moisture

Gilsonite Moisture

One method of quantifying moisture in natural bitumen is measuring the weight loss of a sample after drying.

We can use laboratory method for determining the bitumen moisture sensitivity based on D3173 ASTM method.

Analysis Sample:

The analysis sample is that sample which has been pulverized to pass 250-µm.

Apparatus:

  1. Drying Oven
  2. Capsules, with covers
  • capable of temperature regulation between limits of 104 and 110°C may be used

The shapes of these devices are shown below:

 OVEN

CAPSULE

Test Procedure:

Moisture is determined by establishing the loss in weight of the sample when heated under rigidly controlled conditions of temperature, time and atmosphere, sample weight, and equipment specifications.

Calculation:

%Moisture in analysis sample=[(A-B)/A]×A]×100

Where:

A=  sample used (grams)

B=  sample after heating (grams)
